How To Prepare Your Home For Snowbird Vacation

Snowbird vacations are becoming increasingly popular because they offer a unique opportunity to experience warm weather without having to deal with the cold. This means that you don’t have to worry about packing heavy coats and boots. Instead, you can simply enjoy the sun and sand.

We strongly advise older persons to travel whenever possible. A snowbird vacation to a warmer climate can do wonders. Many older individuals rent or own homes in warmer climates and leave for a period of time every winter. But before you go on a snowbird vacation, make sure you prepare your home, so you do not have to worry about something happening while you are away. How? Let us explain. 

• Before going, make sure to lower the temperature to keep the house warm enough to prevent freezing pipes. Adjusting your thermostat to 50 degrees is usually a good temperature setting but be mindful your insurance company may require it to be set at 55 degrees if away for an extended period of time. 
• Also, turn down your water heater if you are not home and will not need it. Use the Vacation mode setting or Pilot Light only setting. Leaving the water heater on the normal setting will only waste energy and cause more wear and tear on your water heater. 
• Ensure you have installed freeze and water alarms. Make sure they are active and can alert an alarm company or someone you trust to protect your house against water damage. 
• Unplug all your devices, gadgets, and electronics before going for a vacation, as it is not safe to leave devices unattended as there can be an accident or mishap. Also, even devices draw power even when off, so you can save some money.  
• Consider light timers or smart plugs to turn lights on and off automatically. This can give the impression someone is home, to keep things safe. 
• Clean up your home properly before you go. Take out the trash. Clean your fridge. Keep it neat, so you do not come back to any unwanted visitors!
